Platelet Rich Fibrin

The Healing Power of Blood

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a forward thinking procedure that is used in oral surgery. Current state of the art treatment after the extraction of a tooth is to place a socket replacement graft into the socket. This promotes better bone healing and less of a chance for a dry socket. Many substances are used in bone grafting, but the most logical and natural is to use part of the patient’s own body.

Blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and processed in a special unit that separates the fibrin clot from the red blood cells. This clot contains stem cells, cytokines and growth factors that aid in healing. The fibrin clot is used as a membrane over the extraction site. Often the PRF graft will be mixed with the minerals of synthetic bone to enhance new bone formation. This is important when an implant is planned and beneficial regardless of the future restorative option. View our article about PRF
