Sponsor of the Month – Smile Design & Wellness Center

by Chris Edwards, DDS

Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family.

Dr. Edwards started his career at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. While there, he decided he always wanted to be a dentist, his childhood dream, and he was not cut out for the seagoing life. Upon graduation from the USMMA, he went to Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, followed by a one year residency at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. He practiced in Honolulu and in Portsmouth, RI, where he and his wife raised their family of two daughters.

Dr. Bunker grew up in central Russia. She graduated from dental school there and was working as a dentist until she moved to the United States following her sister and mother in 1998. She attended NYU School of Dentistry and graduated in 2003. For the past three years, she has been living and practicing in Florida.

Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now.

Dr. Edwards and Dr. Bunker both spent years practicing in insurance driven dental offices where the insurance company dictated the treatment plans for their patients. They were dissatisfied with the rat race of dealing with insurance companies and not being able to educate their patients and then mutually decide the treatments that best serve them. Smile Design & Wellness Center will work with your insurance company on your behalf to maximize your benefits. They work for the patient, not the insurance company.

What is your business and how/why did you start?

Viera was the perfect place to live. Dr Edwards, his wife Judy, and one of their two daughters came to Florida in 2001 to help with aging parents, and for their daughter Jill to start FIT as a high school senior. In opening Smile Design & Wellness Center in 2001, Dr. Edwards wanted to start a practice that was in service to the patient and not the insurance company. Doctors Edwards and Bunker live in Viera and are happy to be part of the community.

What is unique about your business (what sets us apart from the rest)?

Smile Design & Wellness Center is not your typical dental office that functions on crisis dentistry dictated by an insurance company. They practice Biological Integrative Dentistry, which is a combination of comprehensive whole person dentistry with the most advanced technologies to provide painless, minimally invasive, long lasting beautiful dentistry. At SDIC, dentistry becomes part of the patients’ overall health plan to prevent, and not correct disease, and to educate their patients and the public. In the summer of 2013, Doctors Bunker and Edwards, and their front desk Manager, Lisa Martin, will finish their intensive, advanced training from the American Integrative Medical and Dental Training College ACIMD.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice …

The most important bit of information that we teach all our patients is to be aware of the environment in their mouths, and to understand that the pH of the mouth is a result of the food that you eat. Daily brushing and flossing, and regular dental cleaning are imperative, but so is your daily hygiene. Dr. Edwards is nationally renowned as Dr. Xylitol, and he and Dr. Bunker educate their patients about Xylitol to obtain the correct pH of the mouth, decrease plaque, remineralize tooth enamel, and in certain cases even reverse decay.

What else should we know about you, etc?

Smile Design & Wellness Center’s Dr. Julia Bunker and Dr. Chris Edwards have gone through advanced training and are now considered to be one of the 1/10 of 1% of dental practices in the country that safely removes mercury from your mouth and keeps the waste from impacting the environment. They are experts in Minimally Invasive Dentistry and biocompatible non-metallic dentistry. They utilize Cerec technology to fabricate beautiful, conservative, all ceramic onlays and crowns.
