Better Than the Drill
Air abrasion is a minimally invasive technique used to remove decay. It uses a fine stream of helium to bombard the tooth with very fine particles of medical grade aluminum oxide. Often times the sensitive inner part of the tooth called the dentin can be removed without the need for local anesthetic. There is a sensation of cold, but not the sharp pain that the high-speed drill would cause and there is often no need for a shot of novocaine. The air abrasion is extremely gentle to the tooth unlike the conventional bur on a drill that can cause micro fractures in the enamel. Air abrasion also leaves the most optimal surface to which a restoration will be bonded. Even in a tooth that the conventional drill was used on, for example after safe removal of a Mercury amalgam filling, we will use air abrasion to prepare the surface of the remaining tooth for the best and long-lasting bond to the restorative material we choose, whether it be a resin filling or a CEREC restoration. Dr. Edwards has been using air abrasion for over 20 years and we now are using Crystalmark air abrasion machines, which are the only machines propelled with helium and are considered the finest in the world.
Who would not want the best bond and less removal of their tooth?
