Soft tissue grafting is done for a variety of reasons; the most common is when there is recession of the gum and not enough remaining hard or attached gum. Without adding the hard gum, there is a chance that the recession will continue which results in the loss of underlying bone. This is usually irreplaceable and can lead to loss of the tooth.
Soft tissue grafting can reverse recession and cover an exposed root which improves the appearance of the tooth and adds the protective hard attached gingiva. Grafts are usually taken from the patients' own palate and this is a minor surgical procedure.
