Teeth are created with numerous characteristics for their functionality. The grooves on the chewing surface are meant to grind food easier for our digestion.
Though they are valuable to our daily eating, keeping them healthy is a challenge.

These grooves are made with different depths and openings, some narrower than the bristle of a toothbrush, making tooth brushing a not so easy task. The inability to clean these surfaces is what in many cases begins cavities and decay.

A Pit and Fissure Sealant is the treatment consisting of cleaning out the tooth's chewing surface grooves and sealing them with a resin filling material.  Traditional practices push off this treatment to the dental auxiliary to perform on patients not realizing the importance of this procedure.

Without the
DIAGNODENT to evaluate whether or not decay exists, it is not uncommon to have sealants placed over decay. This can sometimes work but the smallest chip or defect in the sealant leads to the decay regrowing and spreading,

MICRODENTISTRY is the term applied to the most minimally invasive restorative treatment.  The use of air abrasion provides the best bonding surface. It opens up the pits and fissures to allow for adequate room for the sealant to adhere to the tooth.  The use of flowable filled resins and a separate bonding agent make for a sealant that is destined for long term success and clearly superior to the traditional auxiliary delegated sealant.

Sealants are for anyone who wants to protect a virgin tooth at risk and keep decay at bay. For that reason Sealants are for all ages. The best time for Sealants is usually right after our adult back teeth begin to break through the surface.  Remember, by sealing the tooth, bacteria is kept out* for healthier smiles.

*Sealants only seal the chewing surface grooves. Decay can still affect other areas of the tooth. Daily brushing and flossing as well a maintaining a healthy cleaning schedule with our hygienist will prolong the health of your teeth.
