Osseous surgery is needed when the underlying jaw bone has been compromised. Long standing PERIODONTITIS leads to bone loss and this results in an uneven remaining shape.
Osseous surgery involves exposing the underlying bone and correcting the remaining architecture. This can be done by removing the areas that are excessive. In certain cases, lost bone can be added by the use of BONE GRAFTING often in conjunction with membranes that cover the graft and keep the epithelium out as the body heals the new bone graft.
Osseous surgery is often performed in situations where a tooth has broken down too far under the gum due to fracture or caries. This is called Crown Lengthening Surgery and it is performed to lower the gum and jawbone which exposes enough of the remaining root to properly restore the tooth. The patient is left with healthy gum and with adequate room to attach to the tooth.
