The Onlay restoration is a prime course of treatment for teeth that have large fillings or fracture lines. Onlays are similar to CROWNS in that they cover the cusps of the tooth to give the tooth the extra added strength.
Onlays generally last longer than simple FILLINGS and can last as long as a crown. The advantage of an onlay over a CROWN is that it is more conservative; less natural tooth structure is removed in the treatment and sometimes only one or two of a tooth's cusps need to be covered. Onlays are either cemented or bonded into the tooth adding to the strength while preserving natural, healthy tooth structure.
Today's onlays can be made in our office or sent to a dental laboratory, depending on the material of the restoration. Our in-office onlays are made with a material called Ceramage which is usually a one-visit appointment. If a patient wants or needs an onlay made of gold or different high porcelain materials, we will send it to our dental laboratory to be completed, requiring two office visits.
